The theme of this year’s Black Media Summit is Breaking Out of Your Niche, which will focus on discussing the many different ways we, as people in the media industry, can execute and support journalism without being put in a box.

Black Media Futures is a half-day virtual conference that aims to explore the current state and future prospects of Black media. The conference will feature a range of expert speakers and panelists who will share their insights and perspectives on the past, present, and future of Black media.
This hour-long workshop will delve into the process of applying for New York City press credentials. It will also explain the changes introduced by Local Law 46 of 2021, which transferred the responsibility of issuing press credentials from the NYPD to the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) and established the Press Credentials Office (PCO).

This in-person workshop focuses on what journalists can learn from conflict mediators about reporting on polarizing topics with deep empathy, humanity, and nuance. It is designed to help reporters unwind “us vs. them” narratives, challenge stereotypes, locate hope, and tell high-impact stories that open people up to different ways of thinking about themselves, others, and what divides us.
