AI Community Engagement Lab

Leverage AI to better serve your community! This six-month hybrid, tuition-free, and hands-on program invites community journalists to explore artificial intelligence through theory and practice, with a focus on enhancing audience engagement.

The AI Community Engagement Lab was developed by J+ and the Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, with support from the Walton Family Foundation, to empower community journalists to harness AI to engage existing and new audiences, reinforce community trust and increase impact.

The rise of generative artificial intelligence with ChatGPT and other platforms is already revolutionizing news and media with national and international media outlets hard at work testing the technology under expert guidance. We believe that smaller, resource-strapped outlets in underserved communities should not be left behind!

Gen AI has much to offer community media. It can:

  • Increase reporting and editing efficiencies and accuracy
  • Personalize content and engage audiences
  • Expand coverage and reach
  • Help with marketing and business communications
